FULL METAL ALCHEMY: The Making of “The Alchemist”, Part 2
The story of the making of my first true adventure in genuine storytelling- a one-hour, no-budget sci-fi/fantasy adventure- continues. If you want to know what happenned before, here’s part one– otherwise, read on…

ECHOES FROM THE PAST: The Alchemist, Part 6
The ‘flashback’ structure comes to an end, and my VHS-shot action epic- crafted by my sixteen-year-old self with little filmmaking knowledge other than how to film a conversation- edges towards its final showdown. While I would advise any viewers around to turn up their monitor’s brightness levels (Amazingly, I didn’t realise before making The Alchemist that filming down a mineshaft with both lead characters dressed almost head-to-toe in black might not be the wisest idea), the final action sequence here is one of the sections of the film that I’m most proud of. It’s all choreographed and arranged to the Maurice Jarre soundtrack I ended up using (the track is from The Mosquito Coast), and despite my absolutely terrible acting, I’m still pleased with how it turned out.
Come with me down memory lane. Only a short amount to go…

Wednesday Breaks All The Rules (And Steals Your Wallet)
My first drive on a motorway today. Somewhat intense at times, but most of it came together in the end. Bournemouth was at the end, and a meet-up with my friend Paul that went wonderfully well. Just the chance to wander aimlessly and chat about Doctor Who with him is a treat– I haven’t seen him since my Wedding, almost three years ago, but hopefully we’ll be able to sort it so that it won’t be too long before it happens again.
Also had some good, promising thoughts about my book- and I’m looking again at the novel I started on the Novel In 90 community. There may be something there, all I’ve got to do is work out what…

Underground, Overground, Wombling Free
Today’s the day George and I voyage to Bournemouth, to meet up with my long-time friend Paul, who I’ve been hanging out with (on and off) for more years than I care to remember. It’s part of my ‘rehearsal’ for the big drive down to Cornwall when we head down that way on May 6th. It’ll be great to see him, and to show George around some of my University-era haunts– particularly Bournemouth Beach, which was the location for many moonlit strolls and lengthy musings, with only the waves and the sand for company.
Work-wise, things have been pretty busy– I’ve got a couple of reviews left to do, but nothing major at the moment, which is a bit of a relief. What I’m also trying to do is make it all the way through rewriting The Hypernova Gambit again, and it’s a very hard slog– keeping my confidence in the book going at this stage is a challenge, to put it mildly. Having gone through an “It’ll be published, and people will love it!!” phase, I’m now in the slightly more fatalistic phase where all I can see are the bits I’ve gotten wrong, or how my physical descriptions of locations and scenes are a little on the sketchy side (and this, in a 150,000 word book…). I just need a little bit of a lift relating to the book– and I guess I might have to be the one doing the lifting if necessary. I’m up to chapter 4, and we’ll see how things progress.
Finally, after a week-long delay, my copy of Twin Peaks: The Second Season has been despatched, and I’m deeply excited. Am regularly leaping around like a loon going “Season Two! Season Two!” and don’t forsee stopping anytime soon.

TV EYE: New Who, Week 4 – “Daleks in Manhattan”
It’s the fourth episode of the third season of Who, and it seems this time, the DVD of the week is Peter Jackson’s take on King Kong. It might all look great– but is it actually any good? Once again, fear the spoilers…

ECHOES FROM THE PAST: The Alchemist, Part 5
We’re onto part 5– and finally, we get the section of the film that was an insane amount of fun to film (although possibly not quite as much for Tris, who had to spend rather a large amount of time walking around Cornwall College dressed in a gas mask and waving an air pistol). It’s a countdown, as David Harwood has to find a way of recovering the metal carving, and getting it somewhere he can dispose of it, before time runs out and the Alchemist has full control of his friend’s mind. Stand by for plenty of blazing action, disintegrations, punches, loads of enthusiastic running around, loud music, some dazzling special effects, and one particular scene where my character gets his way out of a tight spot in a way that makes absolutely no sense whatsoever. My excuse? The location we wanted to use wasn’t available, so we had to think fast. Whatever happenned, here’s Part 5- enjoy…

FULL METAL ALCHEMY: The Making of “The Alchemist” (Part 1)
Here it is. The full story- at least, until my friend Tris reads through it, and points out all the things I’ve forgotten in the comments. The tale begins…
It was twenty years ago today, Sgt. Pepper taught the band to play…

ECHOES FROM THE PAST: The Alchemist, part 4
Here we are, with part 4 of The Alchemist, my VHS-shot mega-epic from the halcyon days of 1991. Last time we saw our heroes, David Harwood (me) had been chloroformed by Darren Johnson (Tris), mainly because of the fact that Darren is now possessed by the spirit of a 12th century Alchemist with the ability to store his mind inside a piece of metal. This episode- to be honest- is even more exposition (which brings us to almost 15 minutes of pure exposition- I have got a little better, storytelling wise…), but by the end of this, we’re finally on the move and heading towards the majesty of the chase sequence. Trust me- it’s worth the wait…

Slap-Bass Odyssey
Contrary to what this blog might suggest, there has been a lot going on in life. I’ve just gotten to the end of an ultra-wearing run of subbing, plus I completed a fairly gigantic article, and now entered the hallowed phase known as “Well, if I haven’t heard anything, that’s probably good news…” One pleasent side-effect of the subbing was that I was around while the What’s On TV film desk was clearing out their DVD cupboard- and was able to pick up a fantastic amount of swag as a result. Having recently fallen under the spell of fantastically bizarre Brit comedy The Mighty Boosh, I was flirting with the idea of getting their DVD box set- and was then able to grab the first season for free! Huzzah! Plus, I’ve been sampling the second season of Arrested Development, and I’ve got a gigantic stack of movies and TV to watch- and Twin Peaks: Season 2 is finally winging its way towards me on DVD. Admittedly, my multi-region DVD player is finally starting to die, but we’ll cross that bridge when we come to it…
In other news, I’ve recommenced a rewrite on the book. I’m no longer certain if anything I’m doing is actually working, but I figure all I can do is slog through this version, get to the end, and see what I end up with. I’ve got to get myself writing more regularly, and in order to do that, I’ve got to finish what I’m currently working on.
Tomorrow will be another epic journey into London, which should hopefully include 28 Weeks Later, a small-scale, gritty indie film all about a man struggling with his relationship problems and where his destiny truly lies (along with a brief subplot about a black costume that’s actually an alien symbiote), and hopefully a ride down one of the fantastic-looking slides that are currently pretending to be works of art in the Tate Modern. Life is full of surprises…

ECHOES FROM THE PAST: The Alchemist, Part 3
So, we’ve had a mysterious apparition, our heroes have dug a big hole, and recovered an interestingly shaped piece of metal. You’ve seen some suspicious acting, and some even more suspicious hair. We now enter the traditional part of every one of my stories- the “let’s sit down and explain the plot” section. I will freely admit- it’s damn slow in parts (at some point, I’m going to use iMovie and cut a new version of The Alchemist to tighten it up a bit…), but be patient. The chase sequence isn’t too far away.
The story continues…
(And as soon as I get a chance, I’m going to give some serious details about the making of The Alchemist. It’s a fun saga, and I wouldn’t have missed it for the world.)
