Alright, it’s a little more complicated than that.

I’m a freelance writer and reviewer. I write mainly (but not exclusively) for SFX. I also work as a professional proofreader and manuscript reader for a number of publishing companies. I’m on various lists for review copies and Advance Reading Copies (proofs), and fairly regularly get review copies as a result of my work for SFX.

Not all my reviews are positive – I think you can sometimes learn just as much from looking at how a book, comic or film doesn’t work – but I’m largely going to stick to material I’ve enjoyed, simply because this is a spare time activity and I’d far rather be spending my spare time reading and discussing things that I like, and communicating my passion for comics, books, and fantasy in general.

This blog is independent. I’m not going to review any books that I’ve worked on, either in an editing capacity, or simply by doing a freelance reading report assessment. I may occasionally be reviewing books or comics by people I know via the SF/Fantasy scene, but I’ll be approaching those reviews in just as upfront and honest a way as all the other reviews I write.

I don’t review everything that I’m sent. Keeping up with my ‘to-read’ pile is a running battle, and there are always going to be far too few hours in the day.

I don’t review self-published titles – and for the forseeable future, I will be extremely selective about what I am reviewing, mainly due to issues of time.
