TV EYE: PILOT SEASON – ‘Journeyman’ and ‘Life’
We’re inching closer to the start of the new season– and here’s a couple more pilot episodes to contend with. Fear the spoilers…
‘You see, it’s Quantum Leap meets Day Break meets Tru Calling! Doesn’t it sound FABULOUS?!?’ ‘Er…’

Who Watches the Watchmen?
It’s me on one of my brief political bents again– here’s a story from another blog, but one that’s worth spreading. Read it here. The idea of all-pervading conspiracies is a frightening one- but at least there are small reassurances that embarrassing cock-ups are still going to happen…

Alone Again With The Dawn Coming Up
It’s been one of those evenings that sometimes happen to me- you go out with one plan in your head, and thanks to a combination of chance and circumstance, something quite different ends up happening. I met up with an old friend and had a truly splendid evening- but I’ve also ended up lurking in an internet cafe off Charing Cross Road, with the smell of cleaning fluid heavy in the air. I’ve got a train at 5AM that’ll get me home- there’s a few things to do and sort out, but tonight’s been one of those experiences that reminds me why it’s good to get back in touch with people.
Getting home is going to be fun…

Happy birthday to me, Happy birthday to me, Happy birthday to me-e-e, (etc)
Still awake, at the end of a very good day. We’ve had great food, good films (the rather eccentric double bill of Casino Royale and Pan’s Labyrinth), a chance to admire the work of one of my favourite comic artists via the book ‘The Art of Brian Bolland’, and more birthday wishes via Facebook than I could ever have expected. I even got work done, and am marching closer to the end of the book. Pretty soon, I’m really going to have to work out what I’m doing next, but for the moment, things are fine, and I’m very happy.
Hope you are, too.

TV EYE: FLASHBACK- Doctor Who – “Kinda”
It is amazing what you can find on Youtube, especially thanks to the copyright-baiting lunatics who seem to be having a ball by jumping up and down in front of the BBC and shouting “Na na na!” After a recent wonder, I discovered what appeared to be the majority of 1980s Classic Who on there, and found myself watching a story that I hadn’t properly seen for well over twenty years. For once, you don’t really need to fear the spoilers- the following may be rather stream-of-consciousness, but it’s also an attempt to try an express why I love Who, shoddy effects and all. Enjoy…
‘I think Paradise might be a little too green for me, as well…’

Trudging through the snow, laughing as we go…
It’s possible that I might have just done all the structural alterations that I can to my novel. In short, now all I’ve got to do is try to do a fairly thorough rewrite, and get it to a state where every chapter is as good as (or at least approaching) the standard of the first four chapters. If I can do that, I’ll be happy. I just have the suspicious feeling that it’s going to be a very long way towards the end. At the least, though, I’m within reach.
It’ll all be over soon…

TV EYE: PILOT SEASON – ‘Chuck’ and ‘Flash Gordon’
More pilot-related fun. I could have told you something specific about Sex and the City writer Candace Bushnell new series ‘Lipstick Jungle’, if I’d actually got past the first twenty minutes without wanting to hurl myself out of the nearest window. So, instead, here’s some spy shennanigans from the creator of ‘The O.C., and a non-advance review for a show that’s already airing, the less-than-inspired re-imagining of pulp hero Flash Gordon. Fear the spoilers…

TV EYE: Pilot Season – ‘Californication’ and ‘Pushing Daisies’
Part one of my look at upcoming TV pilots for the 07/08 season is here – and now, two more pilots, in readiness to see what survives the bloodbath (although one is a cable show, and is therefore mostly exempt…). One’s genre, one isn’t. One has ridiculous amounts of sex, and one doesn’t. Fear the spoilers…
‘I asked you not to use the word ‘Zombie’. It’s disrespectful!’

The surgery is now open…
Work on the middle of the book began today. It’s starting to come together– slowly, but surely. There are certain other ideas that I’m having– but I’m resisting the temptation to get too complicated. I want it to be good, but I also want to finish, which won’t happen if I keep going “But, if I only changed this…“.
I also managed to get one of the reviews mostly out of the way, and watched a weird, oddly compelling (if bafflingly poetic) Korean movie called The Bow. More progress tomorrow, plus maybe a spot of floor cleaning…
